You might wonder how to get the perfect makeup look. That depends on several factors, like your skin complexion, the products you apply and how you apply your makeup. Using the right products in the wrong order or too much makeup can make it hard to get a flawless makeup look.
The first step is to start with a clean canvas, your skin. Follow your skincare routine before applying any makeup. Once you have put on the moisturizer, serum, and other products, you need to decide how you want to start using your makeup. Applying makeup depends on the type of look you're going for and the coverage you want to attain based on what your skin's doing that day.
Fortunately, with the help of the appropriate makeup products and makeup brushes, we can create a luminous, glowing, flawless look. Makeup coverage can vary depending on what we need or want on a specific day or occasion. To attain the desired look, we can use the help of Foundations, BB Creams, CC Creams, Concealers, Bronzers, Highlighter Sticks, Primers, and many more. There isn't a unique makeup solution for a specific problem or a step-by-step approach for everyone. Some days, we may be puffy, or our dark spots could be more visible than on other days. The best approach is to try various types of makeup products with diverse levels of coverage until we get the desired result. Mixing and matching is always an option.

Type of products to consider for that gorgeous look

Primer: The function of the primer is to enhance makeup application, lasting wear, and coverage of blemishes and little acne scars, providing a smoothing base that easily pairs with any foundation. Once you apply your primer, let it absorb into your skin before you put on foundation for the pigment to adhere better. Although there are different types of primers ranging from mattifying, oil-blocking, and hydrating to color correcting, the best you can do before you apply a primer is to prepare your skin with a moisturizer to ensure a healthy glow and flawless finish.

Foundation: As its name indicates, it acts as the base for your makeup look. Foundation is makeup that provides different coverage depending on its shade and consistency. With the right formula, you can cover blemishes, skin flaws, smooth skin tone, and blur imperfections like redness and hyperpigmentation. A foundation can contain moisturizing, SPF, and oil minimizing ingredients, however, the amount of these ingredients is relatively small, which means your skin will benefit from baseline moisturizers and sunscreens as part of your daily skincare routine. Never underestimate the powerful benefits of moisturizers, especially where your fine lines and wrinkles (crows feet) are more visible to avoid the foundation settling into those areas.

Too much makeup base or too little, the wrong shade, inadequate blending or consistency won't likely help you create the look you want. Finding the optimal foundation color for your skin type and tone can be tricky, especially with so many shades and consistencies available in the market. If you want to know how to determine the correct makeup shade for your skin tone, simply apply a small quantity of foundation, starting along the jawline of your face and extend the application down to the neck to see which shade looks more natural on your skin by creating a seamless transition between your face and your neck. Many brands offer different types of foundation makeup according to your skin type and the coverage you want to obtain. We can narrow down the list to these types of Foundations: liquid foundation, cream, powder (loose and pressed), mousse, and serum.

BB Creams : Stands for Beauty Balm. It is considered a multipurpose kind of makeup as it combines skincare solutions with skin-correcting color pigments, which is more than just another tinted moisturizer. BB creams vary by brand, but many have skincare ingredients that provide positive effects:

  • Moisturizing effect -Hyaluronic acid, ceramides
  • Regenerating effect –Vitamins (A, C, E), antioxidants
  • Sunscreen protection – SPF factor
  • Brightening effect –licorice root
  • Firming effect – hydrolyzed collagen

BB creams with a light texture that provides sheer coverage and conceals minor skin problems, smooths uneven skin tone are a great introduction to color cosmetics for youthful skin, yet in the last couple of years, it has become a staple even for more mature skin due to their ingredients and properties.

Attaining the “perfect makeup look” depends on the coverage you need, such as layering a touch of foundation on top of a BB cream. The best way to apply a BB cream and a Foundation is by mixing a small quantity of each in a dish or on the back of your hand. Carefully choose how to mix your BB cream and your foundation. It all depends on the ingredients and the look and finish you want to attain. For instance, if your BB cream contains hydrating ingredients and illuminating particles, applying a mattifying foundation will cancel out the radiant effect. Applying a BB cream can be as simple as with your fingers for light coverage or using a sponge or makeup brush for a full-coverage result.

CC creams is another multi-tasker that has gained momentum in the last few years. BB and CC creams share some of the same ingredients and purposes. Like BB creams, they blend in skincare ingredients and color pigments into one, easy to use product. Some of the benefits include:

  • Anti-aging effect –Antioxidants
  • Sunscreen protection – SPF factor
  • Brightening effect –licorice root
  • Firming effect – hydrolyzed collagen
  • Soothing effect – green tea, shea butter

As its name indicates, CC creams are “color correcting” makeup products. They are lighter than BB creams and they cover a wide range of skincare problems such as redness, dark spots, dark undereye circles, uneven skin tone, and acne scars. Due to its ingredients and pigments, CC creams oftentimes provide more coverage than BB creams and could be used as a concealer, which can simplify your skincare routine.  Like BB creams, add extra coverage by layering a makeup foundation on top of the CC cream. Mix and match products that do not balance each other out, but complement each other.

Concealer is a makeup product that can double as a foundation. It comes in different shades, and it is very similar, except that it is typically thicker. A good coverage concealer tackles skin discoloration, age spots, blemishes, dark circles, and acne scars. The right way to use it is to apply first a makeup foundation, BB cream, or CC cream, depending on the type of coverage you want. Foundation makeup creates an even skin tone and a makeup concealer can be used to correct those outstanding areas that need extra attention, such as your nose, cheekbones, and the dark circles beneath your eyes. Mix and match the concealer with foundations, BB, or CC creams, but avoid using concealers that cancel out the desired effect of the BB or CC creams. Using a full coverage foundation and full coverage concealer can be too much or give you that overly made-up look.

Bronzer and highlighter are part of the family of makeup products that have become a staple in a vanity box. Very simple to apply and easy to carry in your purse to give a light touch whenever you need one. The bronzer as its name indicates, is used to create a healthy tanned look on your face, to add a warm finish, sort of like you've been sun-kissed. A highlighter creates a glowing effect, by giving some extra highlights. Both products can be used to contour the face by creating the illusion of shadows or light by highlighting the desired features and enhancing the shape of your face. Apply these products after your foundation or BB and CC creams.

Finishing Powder: The primary function is to ensure a long-wear result for your makeup. You might wonder if you can use powder foundation to do the job of a finishing powder, the answer is no. Powder foundations and finishing powders have different consistencies and finishing powders are mostly pigment-free. The latter provides a subtle, extra coverage and locks the makeup foundation in place without making your face look chalky or changing the color of your foundation. It is the go-to vanity staple to combat shine on your nose, forehead, and chin.
